More than 30 million women suffer from some form of hair loss, most of it genetic or female pattern hair loss. When we see hair shedding onto our clothes, brush, in the sink or shower drain we wonder if we are one of them. Often, well-meaning friends cite the adage that it’s normal to shed upwards to 100 hairs a day and placate you by saying “don’t worry about it.” But the nagging worry is there, especially where there is a family history of hair loss. This website is dedicated to providing help and support for women who are losing it.
My name is Candace Hoffmann and I am the author of Breaking the Silence on Women's Hair Loss, a book dedicated to helping women who are losing their hair realize they are not alone.
The American Academy of Dermatology has called women's hair loss "the last taboo." While we will speak to each other about our most intimate things -- our sex lives, our face lifts, our Botox parties -- we choose to ignore our hair loss, pretend it's not happening. We do not reach out to each other for help. Losing our hair is somehow wrong, somehow our fault and alone we need to figure it out.
The medical community isn't as helpful as it could be mainly because there are not a lot of answers out there and physicians like to solve problems -- "Here, take this, follow up in six weeks." Hair loss isn't like that. The hair loss conditions that can be helped are often helped by tincture of time. Those that cannot be helped, or for which there is not a good solution, often run a gamut of potential treatments that end with a shrug and an "I'm sorry."
So as an author, what did I think I could do if medical minds greater than mine can't help you? I figured I could bring attention to it. I could share women's stories. Together we can break the silence and the stigma. As you will see in the Resources page, there is help out there, there are other support groups, there are other women reaching out. I will continually update those resources as well as the information contained in my book.
You might want to take the Hair Loss Quiz if you are dealing with hair loss. These questions and your answers, will be a handy guide to take with you to your physician to help with your diagnosis.
Women's Voices .....
Do you see yourself in these quotes? For Breaking the Silence on Women's Hair Loss, I interviewed more than 100 women for my book who are dealing with various forms of hair loss. You will hear their voices -- some of their words contain despair, some, like the woman for whom her baldness is a "jerk repellent" when dating, are joyous and inspirational. Help me lend your voices to their's. Write me.
